Since the 1970s, there have been extraordinary breakthroughs in the treatment of a wide range of diseases, from heart disease and cancer to diabetes and dementia. Yet, despite the fact that almost half of Australians will experience a mental health condition during their lifetime, there hasn’t been anything like the same innovation in mental health.

The Neuromedicines Discovery Centre (NDC) is working to stimulate research into mental health conditions to bring hope to those for whom current treatments are ineffective.

Please note: The NDC does not provide emergency assistance. If you’re experiencing a mental health condition, your first port of call should be your GP or the emergency room of your nearest hospital. Click here for details of other organisations offering 24 hour counselling.

What we're researching

What are neuromedicines?

Neuromedicines is a term to describe next-generation medicines that act on the brain, and includes psychedelic drugs such as psilocybin, ketamine and MDMA.

A wealth of evidence from studies all round the world suggests that, when combined with psychotherapy under the close supervision of a therapist, they could be helpful in the treatment of a range of mental health conditions where traditional techniques have proved ineffective.

As of 1st July 2023, psilocybin and MDMA can be prescribed by authorised psychiatrists for treatment-resistant depression and PTSD, respectively.
