Eating disorders affect around one in 10 Australians over the course of their lifetime.

What is it?

Eating disorders are mental health conditions characterised by severe and persistent disturbance in eating behaviours and associated distressing thoughts and emotions. They include conditions such as binge eating disorder, bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa.

What are the treatments?

Anorexia nervosa is characterised by restrictive eating that leads to a person being unable to maintain what is considered to be a normal and healthy weight. Unfortunately, anorexia nervosa has no proven medical treatment and is the mental health condition with the second highest mortality rate (after opioid use disorders).

Very early research suggests that psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy may be of benefit for this condition.
